Former guardian of the Master Emerald, Knuckles has now returned to his hobby he started in his youth, traveling to any area either in mobius or other worlds in search of rare Artefacts, jewels or whatever he comes across, though unlike a certain flying bat, he doesn't steal them for himself, instead he either gives them to either museum curators or to Archaeologists.
But he isn't opposed to adventure, after all even the most skilled can have unexpected events happening on a treasure hunt
