Rate Limiting

I'm looking to rate limit some of the actions performed on site that have been used to the same level of spamming, such as photo uploads but this would only impact those of the Standard and below user group.

I'm open to suggestions on what these should be, right now what I have in mind is 5 photos every 1 hour.

What I also have in mind, to combat character profile deletions and remakes is limit character deletions to 1 every 24 hours and character creation to 3 every 24 hours for Standard members.

Again, open to suggestions before I make a move on this. No feedback will be taken as acceptance to what I have in mind and we will march on with what I have came up with.

  • As of this reply, the following has been done:

    • Rate limited Photo App uploads to 5 images per 1 hour.
    • Rate limited Character Profile Creation to 3 characters per 24 hours.
    • Rate limited Character Profile Deletion to 1 deletion per 24 hours.
    • Rate limited Messenger App file sharing to 5 file shares per 1 hour.
    • Revoked file sharing buttons in status feed creation form for Standard users, leaving the Link function intact for all users.

Despite these being set, this is still an open discussion with the community and are subject to change, but for now, this is what we're starting with.

    • The photos seems a bit weird to me if someone just made a new character and had a saved folder of images and wanna get them all up at once. If a limit had to be made, 5-10 is at least a decent number per hour. As for character deletions, I'd say unlimited deletes of characters that have been made , but cap character creation between 1-3 every 24 hours since this would hopefully discourage anyone from deleting/ recreating in a spammy way. If someone is constantly deleting a character, recreating them back to back between the cool down, Possibly have Mods warn them.

I didn't see any rule on it but I remember before the initial shut down of the website there was a cap on profiles people can have? Could also have a set limit for standard users and higher limit for non?

Your two statements in that single paragraph contradict each other, with no cap on deletion, nothing is going to cease someone from deleting and recreating. Having just a limit on the creation isn't going to make anyone stop deleting and recreation, they will just continue to delete to their hearts content to reach max cap for the day, and continue on. Having a cap set on deletions to 1 per 24 hours enforces people to choose their character profiles wisely. Otherwise, their time is otherwise, wasted as they are forced to wait the full 24 hours per deletion.

        • The rate limiting seems fine. It's no different than what RPT had originally either way minus the whole rank thing from RPer to RPer+. I'm sure people can live without uploading more than five pics an hour.

          • Yeah RPT had something similar. I may look into the whole user group automatic upgrades thing again later on down the road, but it won't be time based anymore, it'll go back to the original setup on RPT before I changed it to where it was point based.

Though, with me mentioning points, this does not mean the Pet System is ever making its return. That's still permanently axed as a feature in any services I create going forward. Just making that clear because I know someone is going to ask since I mentioned points.
